For example, when a laptop is set up to access the corporate network via VPN, one would prefer to fix the domain name and DNS servers specified in /etc/resolv.conf.

On Red Hat or its clone platforms, set 

PEERDNS="no"
under /etc/sysconfig/network. On SuSE platforms, set 
DHCLIENT_MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF="no"
under /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp. Also, set 
MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF_DYNAMICALLY="no"
under /etc/sysconfig/network/config.
